At the Global Water Summit held in Berlin, Germany, the joint project between ABB and New Zealand’s Wellington Water Company won the “Smart Water Project of the Year” award at the 2023 Global Water Awards. After using the ABB solution, Wellington Water can measure and store water flow data in real time, saving up to 10% of energy per month.
In order to significantly increase the flexibility of its drinking water infrastructure, Wellington Water worked closely with ABB, using ABB smart flow meters to monitor water flow in real time, and using ABB frequency converters to further improve energy efficiency, benefiting the local community through cost savings and increased flexibility. In public facilities, water pumps consume a large proportion of energy and are also energy-consuming equipment in the water cycle process. ABB intelligent inverters can improve the energy efficiency of water pumps and reduce energy consumption. the
At the same time, the built-in calibration tool and health detection function can assist the operator to ensure the service life of the equipment. Once the data is recorded, it can also be easily exported for further analysis and evaluation of the data, enabling early identification of critical factors and faster remedial action. Wellington Water provides water infrastructure management services to six local councils in New Zealand, including 105 water pumping stations, 248 sewage pumping stations, 148 storage tanks and 27 stormwater pumping stations in different locations.

Amina Hamidi, Global Head of ABB’s Measurement and Analytical Instrumentation business line, said: “This award is the ‘Oscars’ of the water industry, and winning this award is a strong recognition for us. Innovation is at the heart of everything we do, and the global water industry The summit is one of the most important conferences in the international water industry. ABB is committed to helping the water industry provide safe and healthy drinking water to communities around the world, and this award is a full recognition of the hard work and efforts of the ABB team in this regard.”
Wellington Water’s Paul Winstanley said: “This award is a recognition of the successful cooperation between Wellington Water and ABB. We fully understand that efficient management cannot be separated from accurate measurement. As such, ABB’s solution is very important for Wellington Water and our large Water supply and drainage networks are critical. With ABB’s technology, we can ensure that every drop of water is documented.”
